Kharkov Party FAQ

What the hell is Kharkov Party?

Good question! As with any other party, the only way to know what it is is to come in and look around. Meet some people and introduce yourself. And this is exactly what you do here!

Mostly for people who have something to do with Kharkov, the second largest city in Ukraine, this is a place to find old friends and make new ones, exchange news or gossips, and generally have fun. A lot of materials here are in Russian, which is the most common language in Kharkov. And now see the welcome message from Mikhail Simbirsky, the creator of Kharkov Party. Also, please read Disclaimer and Acceptable Use page. Thank you.

What is KOI8 and how do I install it?

KOI8 is a standard for representing Russian alphabet. KOI8 fonts allow you to see REAL RUSSIAN TEXT (like "XAPbKOB") on WWW pages. Here are some pointers about installing them on different platforms:

Why isn't Kharkov Party in KOI8?

There are many people who cannot read KOI8. They include:
  1. People connecting from work for whom it is either inappropriate to install KOI8 there, or who don't have enough priviledges to do so.
  2. People using non-standard hardware or OS (e.g. Amiga, NeXT, VMS, vt terminals).
  3. Students who don't have enough disk quota or priviledges to install KOI8.
  4. Those using some else's or group accounts.
There are quite a few people who come here who cannot read KOI8. Not everyone is using Netscape and MS Windows, you know!

Why is this site called KharkOv Party, not KharkIv Party? Isn't Kharkov in Ukraine, and isn't the city called "Kharkiv" in Ukrainian?

Yes, you're absolutely right. Officially the city is now "Kharkiv". However, until 1990 Ukraine was a part of the Soviet Union, official language was Russian, and the English name was "Kharkov". Futher, most people in and from Kharkov, myself included, speak Russian, not Ukrainian. So we prefer to still call the city "Kharkov".

I am looking for a pen pal. Could you help me?

If you would like to find a pen-pal in Kharkov, Ukraine, write a few words about yourself on the announcement board.
